Fun things to do on the Garden Route - South Africa "So where is the Garden Route? You ask. It is a 200km section of the South African coast that extends from the town of Mossel Bay just the other side of the Tsitsikamma National Park. I recently took the time to return to the Garden Route, this time to research what exciting fun things you can do on the Garden Route. This is a fabulous destination and a certain "must" for anyone visiting South Africa. To sum up the Garden Route, I would call "adventure activities and outdoor golf Mecca of South Africa!" I put together some suggestions here for your trip on the Garden Route.
Scenic: Well, there are a couple of scenic drives on the Garden Route and depending on how long you have and where you are in the night you could include them on your itinerary.
- Swartberg Pass near Oudtshoorn and Meiringspoort - a trip to enjoy a beautiful day with a picnic stop at a beautiful waterfall in Meiringspoort, spectacular mountain scenery and panoramas.
- September road passes, the original route between George and Knysna - dense forest peoples, the tannin-rich black-water rivers, steep gorges and prolific birdlife.
- Montagu - pass through the majestic Outeniqua Mountains between George and Oudtshoorn, the original route, built in 1848 with convicts.
Mossel Bay
Shark Cage Diving - an exhilarating experience that I would recommend to anyone! Mossel Bay is the most accessible experience the great white shark in the world, offering a shorter boat trip more comfortable on the calmer waters of the competition in Gansbaai, near Cape Town. You will leave with a newfound respect for these magnificent predators.
Oudtshoorn - great place to visit especially if it rains everywhere else on the Garden Route. Oudtshoorn is the capital of the Little Karoo, which is classified as semi-desert so that you can count on the weather being fairly well most of the year.
Cango Caves - an underground wonders with the most spectacular stalactite formations
Cango Ostrich Farm - learn more about the industry of ostrich farming that made Oudtshoorn famous and take a ride on an ostrich!
Cango Wildlife Ranch - a sanctuary for endangered wildlife. Get closer with a cheetah or personal diving with fangs.
- A quiet coastal town offering a range of outdoor activities such as paragliding, canoeing and kayaking in Touw River, hiking trails through the desert indigenous forest enchanted Kloofing and rappelling.
Knysna - a bustling little town that happens with much to offer!
I can recommend the Eco Experience at 4:00 Featherbed Bay, which includes a boat ride on the lagoon, a guided tour through the nature reserve, a tractor-trailer ride and a delicious lunch at a fancy restaurant in the old milkwood trees.
Quad biking in the forests and Harkerville Knysna, Knysna heads climbing, canoeing on the Knysna River, hiking in the Knysna forest
