What is the best handheld GPS to use for hiking and mountain biking? I am currently 3 years old Garmin eTrex. It loses the signal when I enter the sparsest treecover. The new units more expensive they are more sensitive to the signal when in the woods?
On holiday last summer, I broke my Garmin GPS 76, and had to use my GPS back, and the old 12 XL.
On returning I called Garmin, and then asked around on the internet told me to get the GPSMAP 60 CSX. This despite the fact that I have not seen enough to be able to use the facilities on a GPS mapping. A person who is looking and Rescue America, said that since obtaining the GPSMAP 60 CSX, he never lost the satellites under the denser vegetation cover or deep canyons.
I live in the county of Surrey in England's most wooded. There is a path I've never been able to maintain a signal. The path is 15 m below ground level on each side, and surrounded by the dense canopy of trees about 60 m high. The GPSMAP 60 CSX still gave me seven satellites, even there.
The only place I lost signal is when I check the path of the bus on which I traveled. The bus stopped at a bus stop, with 20 m high bank of sand, with trees growing to the point of a side with a 10 foot high bank of sand, and large building of the other side. I faded as people boarded the bus. The moment we moved out I got the signal back.
If I'm going to walk in the day, I usually turn the GPS on the kitchen table and turn it on, because if it takes a little more it will happily pick up the signal inside. For the rest of the day if I died during a coffee break or lunch time it will usually position on all the satellites it has already been followed in less than one second.
As you gather I am very happy with it.
You'll have to ask a group like Garmin_GPSMap_60Cx_60CSx for appropriate support for a bike.
As is written with a voice recognition software and verified with a voice synthesizer and a spellchecker. Hopefully there are not many mistakes to feel that this kind of mistake is easy to miss.
I agree with the answer to this old question. The Garmin handhelds with the x in the model number everyone uses Sirf III chipset and antenna sensitivity. These models are the 60Cx and 76CSx and CSX and CSX and some of the eTrex series have new designation x. Among our other hikers the most popular is the 60CSx (cx I use that does not have an electronic compass and barometric altimeter).
I never lose satellite signal under any type of forest cover and rarely in the canyons unusual. I highly recommend these models.
