Exercise Bike CalgaryFree treatment for diabetics Texas: Exercise

Well, well, well. I think we finally have a winner: free treatment for the growing number of people with diabetes. It appears that there are few excuses for diabetics - or one of us, actually - not to exercise. According to recent reports, almost all forms of exercise benefit the long-term control of sugar levels in the blood, whether aerobic, strength / resistance, or both. The two forms together worked better than either one alone. This is great news for Texas, with more than 1.8 million diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes.

There were doubts about the safety and efficacy of weight training for people with diabetes that Dr. Ronald Sigal of University of Calgary and colleagues at the University of Ottawa has decided to contest this hypothesis. Together, they studied 251 individuals whose age is 39-70 type 2 diabetes, none of them exercise regularly. The subjects were divided into four groups: one group participated in aerobic training three times a week, the second group followed a resistance training three times a week, and the third increased their heart rates by the both aerobic and resistance, for a total of hours, three times a week, and the fourth group have participated in any additional exercise whatsoever.

Participants used treadmills, stationary bikes, and / or fitness equipment in health clubs, exercise consistently, and were fed a diet to prevent weight loss undo. Their blood sugar and cholesterol levels were monitored along with other vital statistics. By the end of the study, which was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, levels of participants blood sugar had dropped, and - most important - if their level was A1c hemoglobin, which indicates the average blood glucose over the last six months.

For those who have participated in some form of exercise, their A1c decreased by half a point on average. For those who did both aerobic and resistance, the average decline has been A1c point.

A1c level of a diabetic is crucial because it allows to measure its long-term control of blood glucose. A normal A1C level is between four and six, patients in the study Sigal began on a 6.6 to 9.9. A drop of one point of the hemoglobin is associated with a decrease of fifteen to twenty percent of major cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke, and a decrease of thirty-seven percent of complications such as kidneys, eyes and limb damage.

According to Sigal, some who brought their A1c into the normal range - a feat for almost everyone in this condition. Some participants have even been able to reduce their medication, and many lost weight and fat mass.

These studies are relevant to Texas, which has a population of diabetics higher than the national average, and one quarter of its population goes without health insurance. According to 2006 statistics from the Texas Diabetes Council, 1.3 million men and women eighteen and older in the state have the disease, compared to 15.3 million in the country. Another 400,000 in Texas are undiagnosed.

More men than women Texan himself, and, while non-Hispanic blacks and Hispanics are only slightly more likely to suffer from the condition than whites, the rate of mortality from the disease are more double that of their white counterparts. In fact, diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in Texas, and we believe the state is in fact underestimated the death certificates to both a cause and a condition.

What is perhaps even more disturbing is that recent studies in Dallas, Houston, Austin and show that some risk factors for disease such as obesity are increasing among children . One every 400-600 children in Texas have type 1 diabetes, a much more serious aut.
