Cadence Bike Shop

Cadence Bike ShopInstall New Pedals

So you have a brand new set of pedals. Now you face the challenge of the installation. No problem, installation of new pedals you is easy and you will save the extra cost of a bike shop. We have an overview of the steps necessary for beginners or those who need a refresher course.

You will need the following
Pedal wrench and / or Allen wrench (depending on your pedals)
An old shop towel (paper towel will also)
Swabs
Fat

Removing the old pedals:
Put the old shop towel (or paper towel) under your workspace in case. Place your bike on the ground over the shop towel, or if you have a work stand, the better. If you use a work surface, place your hand on the back wheel to the brake to stop the wheel from turning. Yeah, I know, of course, but sometimes you forget!

Make sure to pass the chain on the big ring before removing the pedals so you do not cut your teeth on the sprocket. They are sharp.

Now you can remove the pedals. Your right foot comes off as any other system of screws that you used. By turning the spindle counterclockwise (left) will release the pedal. No problem.

However, the left pedal is reverse threaded and must be turned clockwise (right) to loosen. This is so you do not inadvertently loosen the pedal while driving. It is logical, but can become frustrating if you do not remember the old rule of left-handed loosy tighty DO NOT apply when dealing with the left rudder. Too many have made the mistake of not reading this part, and then become frustrated when they tighten the left side so tight that it needs a hammer to remove it.

(Even if you turn in the right direction, do not be surprised if you need to put your shoulder into it, water and time can be removed from the fat that causes these pesky pedals stick.)

Side Note: Look Keo pedals with carbon as you can not use a pedal wrench. These pedals require an Allen wrench that you put in the axis of the rear. If you have a cadence magnet there, remember to remove it before attempting to remove the pedal.

Install the new pedals:
So now that the old pedals are off, it's time to clean your son on the crank to remove any dirt or grease. This is where the swabs are useful.

Once it's clean, you get to muck it again with the new fat! Place a strip of fat on both son of the pedal. After they are greased, put them on, but just use your fingers to catch the son and tighten your crank arm. Do not use tools until they are finger tight enough. And again, remember, the left pedal is reverse threaded. Take your time and you will not strip your crank.

After the pedals are tight fingers, remove the pedal wrench (or Allen wrench if that is what is needed). Tighten the pedals to your crank arm (typically ¼ to ½ turn is quite tight). Once in place, use your old rag to wipe off excess grease and you're ready to roll.

Having taken a few times, check the pedals again to ensure they are always pleasant and comfortable against the crank. And if you do a lot of riding in wet weather, it's a good idea to remove the pedals to give them a little fat over time to time. If you've had your pedals to enter a crank, you will understand why it's worth the extra effort.
